I've owned this product for over a month now and so far money well spent. Setup wasn't very easy but I played around with it for about a day and finally got it done. I had to call the help line for help with email setup and later smartphone setup (IP issues). The cameras doesn't show 100% color viewing accuracy but they're ok for the price of this system. I'm looking to upgrade them in a bit. Also cameras on my back porch sets off motion alerts constantly during the day due to a tall tree branches shadows casting from the sunlight onto the pavement and also when it rains but in the evening it's pretty much quiet. I've tried to adjust the sensitivity level , #1 is the lowest it can go so I would have to create privacy areas for where the shadows are for a little peace. all in all I'm satisfied with this purchase not having to spend a whole lot for a camera system. Just received and installed. Cameras have narrow view, but work good in daylight. At night you will need to have a light near by to get any decent video. I Was able to connect my windows computers, tablets and phones through LAN. I am still not getting remote access, appears to be because I have an airport extreme. This product is not Mac friendly (can view using IE, but not safari). For My IPad, IPad 2, iPhone and Samsung galaxy s2 I used an app to get working on LAN. If you are installing your own hard drive it must be Sata, installation of hard drive was easy and directions were found in the owners manual. I will definitely be upgrading cameras over time to get wider views and audio. For the price I am satisfied. From what I can tell to get remote access you will need a DDNS name and server, which I am struggling to get working on my airport extreme. I might try a different router I have laying around just to see if I can get remote access working. I will update if I have success with remote access (outside of my LAN). (Posted on 6/21/12)

I own 2 of these DVR systems, in my experience they are the best. For years I struggled with PCI based DVR solutions, (SAMS club specials to) they ALL SUCK. The software for all PCI based cards is the same Chinese garbage. No support, no updates, short operational life.

Out of the box the Zmodo systems work very well and without hassle. Couple of points to this...

#1 Camera quality, for the price you can't expect the best. The most important feature here is the DVR and these are worth the price (- cameras). These don't have much range, they are too small you really need to tailor cameras to your environment. Buy a larger one for distance visibility at night. Do your research. You can't expect these to see a license plate 15" away.

#2 To improve image quality use coax and not the dual cables provided. Lot of quality loss in these but it isn't practical for companies to sell these with large coax bundles shipping would eat you.

Only complaint I have is the manual is bad engrish.

Regarding the actual DVR, it's fairly easy to use, the interface isn't the best but it is better than other systems. The IE software is like all IE software, its buggy. This one isn't compatible with mac but you can use vMEye on your iPhone to view it remotely. There are other options for Mac, I don't ding the DVR for bad third party integration. DVR should be standalone and work on its own anyway. The newer model is mac compatible. As for upgrades, there are non, but its pretty rock solid as is. Would be nice to be able to shell into it to play with the linux build on it. Again I wouldn't ding this product for the lack of upgrades when you compare it to the rest of the low end DVR market. Everything works great, cameras are good too but you aren't going to capture every freckle on a guys face. Everything you need right out of the box except a special locking video output cable or adapter to regular RCA whick you will need to review the recoreded video on a TV. The field of view is good. The DVR is great, if you need great detail on a particular channel (it has four) then swap out the camera with a higher end one on that channel. Also with the adjustable mounts the plastic wing nuts crack when you over tighten them so I used pliers to tighten the remaining stud to get a real solid position. Get it! (Posted on 4/5/12)
